Spring Into Fresh: What's New on the Menu Right Now

There's a particular kind of joy that happens in the kitchen when the spring produce starts rolling in. The quality shifts — you can feel it, and more importantly, you can taste it.

April and May are some of our favorite months at Four Café. Farmers' markets in the Eagle Rock and Highland Park area are stacked right now with the kind of ingredients that make cooking simple food feel like an act of generosity. Bright herbs. Tender greens. Strawberries that actually smell like strawberries.

What We're Working With

Right now, our team is leaning hard into what's in season: shaved asparagus, pea shoots, English peas, and the first of the local strawberries. You'll find these woven into bowls, salads, and specials throughout the week.

A few things worth calling out:

  • The Spring Grain Bowl — Our current obsession. Farro, roasted asparagus, herbed ricotta, pickled onion, a soft-poached egg, and a lemon-tahini dressing that ties it all together. Light but genuinely satisfying.
  • Strawberry Smoothie — Back for the season. We don't sweeten it beyond the fruit itself — that's the whole point. Just frozen banana, fresh strawberries, almond milk, and a little vanilla.
  • The Green Plate — This one rotates with whatever we're most excited about that week. Lately it's been a combination of sautéed pea shoots, avocado, crispy chickpeas, and a green goddess dressing we make in-house.

Why Seasonal Eating at Four Café Actually Matters

We're not chasing a trend here — this has been our philosophy since we opened in 2010. When you build a menu around what's growing now, you get food that's more nutritious, more flavorful, and less traveled. Our produce doesn't sit in a distribution warehouse for two weeks before it gets to your plate.

The other side of that equation: our team gets to cook things they're genuinely excited about. A line cook who's fired up about what they're making is going to produce better food. It's that simple.
